Sindh says robotic surgery is part of wider push for modern care

Speaking at the event, Sindh Health Secretary Tahir Hussain Sanghi said the launch of robotic surgery at Lyari General Hospital was part of the Sindh government’s policy to introduce modern technology in the health sector.

He said the provincial government was also introducing robotic surgery and other advanced technologies at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and other medical institutions, and said the results would be positive and improve care for patients.

Sanghi added that robotic surgery gives better results and that modern technology can make treatment more effective. He congratulated the hospital team on completing more than 100 gynecology robotic surgeries.

He also said that in the coming months, several new health projects and facilities would be inaugurated in Sindh. He named projects in Razzaqabad and Gulshan-e-Hadeed, and said work was under way on them.

On a question about the formation of a super medical board in the Mir Raza case, Sanghi said he was not aware of the matter.

Nadar Nabeel Gabol said the Sindh government had allocated 11 percent of gross domestic product, or GDP, for the health sector, and that about Rs400 billion had been set aside for health.

He said the Lyari Transformation Project would help promote development and modern facilities in the area. He added that the use of modern technology in health care was also an important step in that direction and could help provide better treatment to citizens.

What doctors said about tele-robotic surgery

Prof Dr Anjum Rahman said the completion of 100 robotic surgeries at Lyari General Hospital was a major achievement.

He said his institution had a founding role in the launch and promotion of tele-robotic surgery in Pakistan’s public sector.

Addressing concerns about cost, he said the treatment is often seen as expensive, but claimed robotic surgery is 63 percent cheaper than conventional surgery. He also said trainers are being trained to build the skills of medical experts in this field.

“A surgeon can operate from another country”

Prof Dr Sahr Fatima described the usefulness of tele-robotic surgery and said the technology allows a surgeon to perform an operation while sitting in another country.

She also claimed that the procedure has no complications.

It was also stated that the robotic surgery facility at Lyari General Hospital was inaugurated recently by the Sindh health minister.

The hospital said women from Lyari, other parts of Karachi and other cities are benefiting from the service. Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho also visited Lyari General Hospital, according to the source.
