Karachi’s Infrastructure Plan Revealed

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has said the provincial government is pursuing an integrated plan to improve Karachi’s infrastructure, transport connectivity, water and drainage systems and other urban services. He said the effort is aimed at strengthening the megacity’s economy, with major projects such as the Port Qasim-M-9 link road and the Red Line and Yellow Line bus rapid transit systems included in the plan. “Karachi is not only the economic hub of Sindh but of Pakistan. Investment in the city’s infrastructure is, therefore, an investment in the country’s economic development,” he said.

Memon said the proposed elevated expressway linking Karachi Port with Qayyumabad would create a strategic connection between the port, industrial areas and major highways while easing heavy traffic on the city’s roads. He said the Karachi Port-Qayyumabad Corridor would connect the port to M-9 and other key routes via Qayyumabad and Shahrah-e-Bhutto, improving freight movement and supporting trade and industrial activity.

Transport projects at the centre

According to the minister, the Red Line and Yellow Line bus rapid transit projects are among the major works being pursued by the PPP-led Sindh government as part of a broader push to improve connectivity and support economic activity in Karachi. He said the government’s objective is to develop the city as a modern urban centre through coordinated investment in infrastructure and public facilities.

Urban services and economic impact

Memon also said the provincial government’s integrated plan covers water and drainage systems along with other urban services, reflecting a wider effort to address the city’s needs beyond transport alone. He maintained that improving Karachi’s infrastructure would benefit not just local mobility but also trade, industry and the broader national economy.

Next phase in Karachi’s development

The minister’s remarks place Karachi’s roads, public transport and utility systems at the centre of the Sindh government’s development agenda. With the port corridor, link road and BRT projects all presented as part of one integrated strategy, the province is signalling that future investment in the city will be tied to both congestion relief and long-term economic growth.
