Karachi’s Sindh Rangers have arrested a “highly wanted” terrorist in an intelligence-based operation in Gulistan-e-Johar, with officials saying the suspect was linked to a November 2020 attack on the Assistant Commissioner of Nawagai in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The arrest was announced on Thursday by a Rangers spokesperson, who said the man had been hiding in Karachi after the incident and was allegedly planning further terrorist activity in the city.
Arrest in Gulistan-e-Johar
According to the Rangers, the suspect was identified as Dost Muhammad, son of Gul Faraz Khan, a resident of Bajaur. Officials said he was involved in the attack on the Assistant Commissioner of Nawagai, during which government machinery was set on fire and firing took place. The case was registered with the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) Malakand Region under serious terrorism charges.
Link to the 2020 attack
The Rangers statement said the suspect had gone underground in Karachi after the November 2020 incident in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Authorities believe he was not only connected to that earlier attack but was also planning to carry out terrorist activities at sensitive locations in Karachi with accomplices.
Search for accomplices continues
Rangers officials said raids are under way at different locations to apprehend his associates. The arrested militant has been handed over to the CTD Police in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for further legal proceedings, according to the spokesperson.
Security concern in the city
The arrest underscores the ongoing security challenge faced by law enforcement agencies in tracking suspects who move between provinces and attempt to remain hidden in large urban centres such as Karachi. In this case, officials say the operation prevented a suspect wanted in a serious terrorism case from continuing alleged plans at sensitive sites in the city.
