A suspected robber was killed in gunfire from a security guard outside Yameen Kabab House at Soldier Bazaar No. 3, with police later taking the guard into custody and seizing his weapon. The incident unfolded on Nashtar Road and left one person dead, though questions remained over the victim’s identity as different witnesses and officials offered conflicting accounts. The deceased’s body was shifted to Civil Hospital by a Chhipa ambulance.
Conflicting accounts after the shooting
According to an initial account given to police and media by Faheem, a worker at a soda shop, the dead man was 23-year-old Asim, a resident of Lines Area with ancestral ties to Sukkur. He said two robbers arrived on a motorcycle, shot Asim in the chest during an attempted robbery, and escaped.
But the Soldier Bazaar SHO later told the media that Asim was accidentally shot by the security guard, who has since been taken into custody along with the weapon used in the firing. Shortly after the body reached Civil Hospital, Faheem, the owner of Lamka Shop and other employees also arrived and said the deceased was not Asim but another man. Later, when Asim’s mobile phone was called, a friend answered and said Asim was at home asleep and had taken the day off from work.
CCTV footage changed the picture
Police obtained CCTV footage from Lamka Shop that showed three people arriving on two motorcycles. One of them was openly carrying a .222 rifle, while another had a pistol visible in the footage. The motorcyclist with the rifle stopped in front of a real estate agency next to Lamka Shop and brandished the weapon, demanding that the shop shutter be closed. A family sitting at Lamka Shop became frightened and went inside, while an online food delivery rider laid down his motorcycle and ran into the shop.
The footage showed the two motorcyclists standing there and waving their weapons before leaving on their motorcycle. During the same sequence, a person was seen running, and the security guard of a nearby salon opened fire, hitting the fleeing 22-year-old in the right side of the chest. He died on the spot, according to the CCTV account shared by police.
Scene evidence and police position
Police said they recovered one shell casing and two live rounds from the scene. The SHO maintained that the deceased is allegedly a robber and said the identification process is still underway. He also told the owner of Lamka Shop not to share the CCTV footage with anyone without police permission.
Identity dispute deepens
The shooting has now become a case not only of an armed confrontation but also of uncertainty over who the dead man was. While the first account linked the body to Asim, later claims from people at the hospital and a phone call to Asim’s mobile suggested he may have been alive and at home. Police are continuing the identification process while keeping the security guard in custody and reviewing the footage that captured the movements before and after the shooting.
