The Sindh government has officially introduced the Greater Karachi Regional Plan 2047, launching a long-term effort to reshape Pakistan’s largest city through improved infrastructure, sustainable development and expanded public facilities. Officials said the plan is aimed at preparing Karachi for major population growth and rising pressure on transport, housing, the environment and civic services. “The Greater Karachi Regional Plan 2047” is expected to guide the city’s future development, with public consultation playing a central role.
Karachi braces for growth
The planning initiative comes as Karachi prepares for rapid expansion over the next two decades. Projections included in the plan show the city’s population crossing 31 million by 2047, underscoring the urgency of strategic urban planning. Authorities said the framework is designed to help create a more organised, efficient and liveable metropolitan structure capable of supporting the city’s demographic and economic growth.
Population, services and mobility pressures
The forecast points to mounting strain on Karachi’s transport systems, housing stock, environmental conditions and civic services. In response, planners are examining integrated transport systems and better connectivity between residential, commercial and industrial areas. The plan also places strong emphasis on environmental sustainability, including green spaces, climate resilience and stronger urban management.
Public input to shape the plan
As part of the consultation process, an open house exhibition for the Greater Karachi Plan 2047 will be held from May 16 to May 19, 2026 at Khaliq Dina Hall on MA Jinnah Road in Karachi. Citizens, urban planners, architects, environmental experts, academics and business community members have been invited to take part and share ideas on the city’s future development.
Consultation, proposals and review
Officials said the exhibition is meant to encourage public involvement in the preparation of Karachi’s long-term master plan. Visitors will be able to review proposed development strategies, planning frameworks and infrastructure concepts aimed at tackling the city’s urban challenges. Authorities said public feedback and expert recommendations will play a central role in shaping the final version of the plan.
Next phase runs through 2027
The Sindh government, working with the Karachi Development Authority (KDA), has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming Karachi by 2047. Officials said the plan will help guide future investment, infrastructure expansion and land-use management across the wider Karachi region. The Greater Karachi Regional Plan 2047 is expected to be completed by June 2027 after a comprehensive review and consultation phase involving government institutions, planning experts and community stakeholders.
