Dr. Waseem Qazi Appointed VC of University of Karachi

The controlling authority of public universities in Sindh has appointed Dr. Waseem Qazi as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi for the next four years, after approval from Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah. Secretary of Universities and Boards Abbas Baloch issued the notification, while the final decision followed the chief minister’s meeting on Friday morning with the three nominated candidates. Dr. Qazi, who has been serving as Vice Chancellor of Karachi Metropolitan University for the past two years, will now lead one of the province’s largest public universities under the act for a four-year term.

Chief minister approves final choice

The appointment came after Murad Ali Shah personally met Dr. Waseem Qazi, Dr. Moazzam Khan and Dr. Shafiq ur Rehman. Following that meeting, Dr. Qazi’s name was approved for the post. The process had been overseen by the search committee chaired by Sindh Higher Education Commission Chairman Dr. Tariq Rafi, which evaluated the shortlisted candidates before the chief minister’s decision.

Search panel placed Qazi ahead

According to the marks awarded by the committee, Dr. Waseem Qazi secured 86 marks, ahead of Dr. Moazzam Khan’s 74 and Dr. Shafiq ur Rehman’s 71. The numbers show why Dr. Qazi emerged as the top candidate in the final round of consideration for the University of Karachi’s top administrative post.

Candidate Marks
Dr. Waseem Qazi 86
Dr. Moazzam Khan 74
Dr. Shafiq ur Rehman 71

Transition follows KU vacancy period

The change in leadership comes after the former vice chancellor of the University of Karachi, Dr. Khalid Iraqi, completed his first regular four-year term on July 28, 2026. During the interim period, Dr. Tufail Ahmed, Vice Chancellor of NED University, was given additional charge of Karachi University. The source also notes that Dr. Tufail Ahmed is currently on a 20-day trip abroad, underscoring the timing of the latest appointment.

New tenure begins at Karachi University

Dr. Qazi’s four-year appointment now sets the stage for a fresh tenure at Karachi University, with the formal notification already issued and the province’s top political and higher-education authorities having cleared the way. The move closes a transitional chapter for the university and hands the responsibility to an academic administrator who has led both a public-sector institution and the private-sector Iqra University.
